Thursday 26th June, 5:45pm
The Stable Yard Gate, Cleveland Row
Talk at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, at 6pm
Dinner at the Travellers’ Club, 106 Pall Mall at 7:30pm
This year we mark the quatercentenary of the accession in 1625 of King Charles I to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland. It was in his reign, in 1630, that Sion College was founded. Charles, who is venerated as King and Martyr on 30th January in the Church of England calendar, was confined at St James’s Palace and it is believed that he received Holy Communion there before walking across St James’s Park to his beheading on the scaffold outside the Banqueting House at Whitehall.
The talk on the life and reign of King Charles I will be delivered in the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace by Canon Paul Wright who is an experienced military historian and lecturer with a special interest in the English Civil War. Lt Col the Revd Canon Paul Wright LVO was ordained in 1993, and in 2014 was appointed Sub-Dean of the Chapels Royal and Domestic Chaplain to The Queen in London. He was appointed the Domestic Chaplain to The King in September 2022.
Following the talk, wine will be served at St James’s Palace, before fellows and members move along Pall Mall for dinner at the Travellers Club.
