A Seminar Supper with Andrew Davison

Astrobiology and Theology

Wednesday 7th June, 2023, 7:00 for 7:30 pm

The Café Below, St Mary Le Bow Church, Cheapside, London EC2V 6AU

The discovery of the first planet around another sun, in 1995, turbocharged the scientific discipline of astrobiology, while the successful launch of the James Webb Space Telescope has given us an unprecedented ability to search for signs of life elsewhere in the galaxy. Christian theologians have been writing about the implications of life beyond Earth, more or less continuously, since the middle of the 15th century, although - typically taking it in their stride - they rarely wrote more than a couple of paragraphs at a time. After a nine-month residence in Princeton on a NASA-sponsor scheme to think about these topics, Dr Davison is in an unparalleled position to talk to us about this astrobiology and Christian doctrine, not least about how our terrestrial theology is invigorated by looking at these themes, even if evidence for other life never turns up.

Andrew Davison is the Starbridge Associate Professor in Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and Fellow in Theology and Dean of Chapel at Corpus Christi College.
